James Li is a professional violinist and violin teacher. In September 2026, he will begin the Artist Diploma in Performance at the Royal College of Music, London. He holds a Master of Arts in Violin Performance with Distinction and a First-Class Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Violin Performance from Mozarteum University Salzburg, where his conservatoire training began at Pre-College level.His musical development has taken him from graded examinations and performance diplomas through pre-conservatoire, undergraduate and postgraduate study. Having progressed through both the ABRSM and Trinity pathways himself, James has first-hand knowledge of their examination criteria and performance requirements.His qualifications include ABRSM Grade 8 Violin with Distinction, the DipABRSM in Violin Performance and the LTCL Violin Recital with Distinction. He also holds advanced qualifications in piano and music theory. His early teaching experience includes supporting a violin student in preparation for ABRSM Grade 8, culminating in a Distinction.James has performed internationally as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral player across Europe, Asia and North America. His experience of competitions, concerto performances and solo recitals informs his approach to preparation, musical communication and performing with confidence.As a concertmaster, first-desk orchestral player and chamber rehearsal leader, he has developed extensive experience of ensemble playing, sight-reading, coordinated bowing, rehearsal techniques and musical leadership. His training in piano and music theory also enables him to help students understand harmony, musical structure, aural awareness and effective collaboration with other musicians.James’s musical development has been shaped by teachers at every stage of his journey. His early teachers, Wing Shun Lee, Kiann Chow and Vivien Leung, established the technical and musical foundations that supported his progression to conservatoire study. At conservatoire level, his principal teachers have included Pierre Amoyal, Wonji Kim-Ozim and Adrian Levine. The breadth of these influences informs his thoughtful and individual approach to helping students develop through different stages of their own musical journeys.Professional standards: James holds an Enhanced DBS certificate with a Children’s Barred List check for the Child Workforce, has completed Safeguarding in Music Education training, and is a member of the Independent Society of Musicians and the European String Teachers Association UK.

Who are lessons suitable for?
Lessons are best suited to students who already have some experience of playing the violin and are able to read music. Enquiries are welcome from students working at approximately ABRSM Grade 4–5 level, or equivalent, and above, as well as post Grade 8 players and committed adults returning to the violin.Do you teach complete beginners?
At present, James is focusing on students with previous playing experience and is not generally accepting complete beginners.Can students prepare for exams or auditions?
Yes. Lessons can support preparation for ABRSM and Trinity practical examinations, auditions, music scholarships, competitions, festivals and performances. Preparation may include technical work, repertoire, sight-reading, performance confidence and effective practice strategies, alongside the student’s broader musical development.Can I arrange an initial lesson?
Yes. New students are welcome to arrange an Initial Lesson before deciding whether to continue with regular tuition. This provides an opportunity to discuss the student’s previous experience and musical goals, work together in a normal lesson setting, and consider the most suitable approach for future lessons. The Initial Lesson is charged at the usual lesson rate and paid individually in advance.Where do lessons take place?
Regular lessons are held at James’s teaching studio in Cheltenham. Initial Lessons may take place either at the studio or in a suitable public music room in Cheltenham, depending on the arrangement. Students from across Cheltenham and Gloucestershire are welcome to enquire. Full location and practical details are provided once the booking is confirmed.Are lessons weekly?
